USB is a great way to connect all kinds of devices to a computer. However, the drawback is that the USB port also provides power to devices that need it (usually external hard drives, scanners, anything with lights, etc.). Often computers (especially older and/or cheaper ones) lack sufficient power to drive all those peripherals.
This full-size 4-port USB hub is powered by an external AC power supply (but it will work without power supply as well). The power supply ensures that ALL devices hooked up to the hub will have enough power. This power supply provides a whopping 2,000mA total to all ports combined. Most other powered hubs include just a wimpy power supply that maxes out at about 600mA.
The hub is USB 2.0 compliant, will also work with USB 1.1 devices and computers and the LED status light that shows you it's working. It's Plug-and-Play ready, so all you have to do is unpack it, hook it up and you're in business. No software or drivers to install at all.

Beware of "self -powered hubs". Those are the hubs that get their power from the computer and are always underpowered. An AC powered hub is more expensive, but as always: you get what you pay for...

magicJack users
Have you tried hooking your magicJack device up to a hub only to find it would not work? Fret no more... this hub WILL work with your magicJack! magicJack Technical Support actually even RECOMMENDS this hub. And I can personally guarantee it will work with magicJack, because I use their service myself for my personal home phone line and use this hub in conjunction with it. THAT's how powerful this hub is... If you're experiencing magicJack problems, be sure that the origin of the problem is a weak USB port on your computer. If it's something else (software) magicJack related, this hub will not fix THAT problem, of course! I've sold so many of these hubs to magicJack users (it's in the hundreds now), I've stopped counting.

External Hard Drives
This hub also works great for external hard drives. Older computers sometimes simply don't have enough 'juice' to power an external hard drive, even though those drives often come with a so-called Y-USB cable (to connect the drive to 2 USB ports at the same time for more power). If the drive comes with a Y-cable you would still need to use the Y-cable with this hub (that's how the drive was designed), but I know for a fact that the "My Passport" external hard drive will work without a Y-cable, whereas that drive often has trouble when hooked up directly to a computer without an AC powered hub..
iPods and other USB charged devices
You can even use this powered hub to charge your iPod, camera and anything else that you'd normally hook up to USB to charge. Why would you do that, you ask? The advantage is that you do not need to keep your computer on JUST to charge your device... Saves a lot of electricity. So you could even state this powered hub is "green" and "eco friendly"!
