External GPS antenna is highly preferable over an internal one, as it allows you much greater leeway over where to mount the unit. You can mount the unit inside an overhead cab with metal roof without having to worry about GPS reception issues. Even if a unit with an internal GPS antenna is mounted under the fabric cab cover, the GPS signal is degraded and is not as reliable and precise as the signal acquired with antenna mounted in clear view of the sky. Just think if you have your internal antenna mounted under a METAL roof!
